What is orthodontic treatment?

What is orthodontic treatment?

These are treatments to direct the development of the jaw and face and to eliminate the crowding in the teeth.

When should the first orthodontic treatment examination be done?

Orthodontic treatment allows to direct the development of the jaw, to guide the teeth to take their place in the mouth where they should be. For this reason, it is beneficial for parents to show their children to an orthodontist at the age of 6-7 when permanent teeth begin to appear in the mouth. Apart from that, your child:

Has used a pacifier for a long time

If you have a habit of thumb sucking

If he is breathing through his mouth

If you have a cleft lip-palate problem

If the lower jaw is too forward or too far back

If there is any trauma to the jaw area

If tooth deficiency has been detected before

If one or more of the milk teeth are extracted early

If his teeth are crooked

may need orthodontic treatment.

Does age matter in orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic disorders occur in two ways.

Dental Disorders: Jaw relations are normal. Problems with the position of the teeth.

Skeletal Disorders: The position of the lower and upper jaws relative to each other is not compatible or their development is not compatible with each other and with the teeth.

The treatment process in orthodontic treatment to be applied only for the elimination of dental disorders is the same in every age group. In cases where skeletal disorders also need to be corrected, orthodontic treatment should be started during the growth and development period and thus the jaw development should be directed. It is even possible that the need for fixed orthodontic treatment with wires is eliminated by only directing the development of the jaw and the eruption of the teeth in the correct position.

The chance of treatment continues in individuals who have completed growth and development but have skeletal disorders. This procedure, called orthognathic surgery, is the surgical adjustment of the positions of the lower and upper jaws relative to each other.

In conclusion, we can say that orthodontic treatment is possible at any age. Age only changes the form and process of treatment.

What should be considered before starting orthodontic treatment?

Since there will be wires in the mouth during orthodontic treatment, it will be more difficult than ever to provide oral hygiene. For this reason, decayed teeth should be treated, extractions should be completed, and gingival problems should be eliminated before starting the treatment in order to prevent new problems from occurring and to prevent existing problems from progressing.

What should be considered during orthodontic treatment?

The most important point you should pay attention to during orthodontic treatment is oral hygiene. While there are wires and brackets in the mouth, there are special toothbrushes for those undergoing orthodontic treatment to ensure oral hygiene. With the help of these brushes and gargling, you can easily ensure your oral hygiene. If needed during orthodontic treatment, you can have tartar cleaning done.

What should be considered after orthodontic treatment?

After your teeth are fixed and your treatment is over, a reinforcement treatment is applied in order to maintain the current situation.

What is Reinforcement Therapy?

It is a preventive treatment applied to prevent your teeth from returning to their original position. For this, fixed and movable protectors are used. Your doctor will choose the most suitable for you.

Movable protectors are in the form of thin, transparent, invisible plaques. You should remove these protectors while eating or drinking. However, it is very important to wear these plaques for the period recommended by your doctor in order to prevent reversal in your treatment.

Fixed protectors are protectors that stick to the inner surfaces of your front teeth and fix your teeth together. The fact that it cannot be removed is easier to get used to. However, the formation of tartar (because the patients cannot easily provide adequate cleaning) is faster in these protectors. If your fixed protector comes off for any reason, you should contact your doctor immediately. Tooth movements occur very quickly.

Does It Damage Tooth When Removing Braces?

While the wires are being removed, the adhesive that allows the brackets to adhere to the tooth surface is easily separated. After the wires are removed, the tooth surfaces are cleaned and polished. The protective enamel layer of your teeth is not damaged.

Is Orthodontic Treatment Possible Without Tooth Extraction?

In orthodontic treatment, tooth extraction is not required in all cases. Orthodontic treatment is possible without tooth extraction if the jaw development is at a sufficient level and there is enough space for the placement of the teeth. Your orthodontist will decide whether the treatment will be with or without extraction after making the necessary examinations. Tooth extraction treatment is usually done after the growth and development period is completed. The tooth to be extracted is usually your premolars. Among these teeth, teeth with caries, fractures and periodontal problems are usually chosen for extraction. The place required for growth, development is complete and the existing teeth can line up properly is obtained by tooth extraction. At the end of the treatment, you will not feel the absence of these teeth.

Do Wires Affect My Speech?

Speaking and making the sounds properly are of great importance in our mutual relations, social life and business life. Wires do not affect your speech in general, but; You will have a certain adaptation period in the first period they are attached.

Fixed Orthodontic Treatment

It is a treatment method with the help of apparatuses that transfer the force to the tooth, called brackets, which are adhered to the tooth surface by the orthodontist, and shape memory wires passing through them. The biggest advantage of fixed treatment is that it is adhered to the tooth surface and cannot be removed by the patient.

Brackets attached to the tooth surface are of two types, metal and porcelain (tooth-coloured). Both types are suitable for all age groups.

It is quite natural to have feelings such as pressure, compression, inability to touch your teeth, numbness in your teeth for the first 2 days when your braces are placed. These are the harbingers of the beginning of tooth movement. There may be parts of your cheeks and lips that are irritated during the adaptation process. These are completely temporary.

Invisalign (Wireless Orthodontic Treatment)

Before the treatment, measurements are taken from the patient and these measurements are scanned in 3D. The teeth are arranged in a computer environment and personalized plaques are prepared. The treatment is done with the help of prepared transparent plates (aligners). It consists of a series of aligners that can be removed by the patient and replaced every two weeks. Depending on the difficulty of the treatment, the number of aligners also varies from person to person.

Invisalign treatment can be applied in all age groups, in patients with mild to moderate crowding. However, a treatment that requires tooth extraction is not suitable for invisalign.

Since the control of removable plates is in the patient, the patient should wear the plate for about 20 hours during the day. Plaques should only be removed while eating or drinking.

Lingual Orthodontics

It is a type of fixed orthodontic treatment. Brackets adhered to the teeth are adhered to the inner part of the teeth, not the visible surface. More aesthetically, it is a recommended method for patients who do not want their braces to appear. The duration of treatment is slightly longer. Since the brackets are on the inside, speech disorders and tongue injuries may occur during the adaptation period.

Treatment with Removable Appliances

They are plates made of acrylic part and wires specially prepared for the person. Since it is not attached to the teeth, the patient can put it on and take it off. If treatment can be provided with small tooth movements, they are used to guide the development of the jaw, as a preparation for the treatment before orthodontic treatment, and to ensure the permanence of the treatment after orthodontic treatment.

Treatment with Functional Appliances

They are used to correct the position of the jaws relative to each other in skeletal disorders due to jaw development. They are custom made. Patients can put on and take off themselves. Patient compliance is very important as they are used during the developmental period and the insertion and removal process is under the control of the patient.

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthodontic treatment alone may not be sufficient to eliminate skeletal disorders due to jaw development. In these patients, in addition to orthodontic treatment, surgical treatment is also applied to correct the position of the jaws relative to each other and to the face.
